Overview
This 1954 Holden FX Army Ute (50-2106, Body No. 511) is a meticulously restored example, believed to have been built in Woodville, South Australia. The restoration was conducted to military specifications, including Deep Bronze Green unpolished finish on exterior and interior surfaces, Dusky Beige steering wheel, and Copper Brown PVC trim. The vehicle features a 12-volt battery system while maintaining the appearance of the original 6-volt generator, and the dash remains minimal with no ashtray or radio provisions.
Special military fittings include reflex markers, an auxiliary folding seat for three in the load compartment, roll-up canopy cover with three bows, windshield drip mould, canopy side guards, external rear mirrors, rear bumperettes, fire extinguisher and bracket, oil filter, fuel cap chain, jerry can holder, radio suppressor, engine strap, and a metal plate mounted on the front of the rear tray. The vehicle bears military unit markings of the 3rd Division C.M.F., including gold crossed swords with the AMF (Rising Sun) badge and Roman numeral “III” on a red background, along with the Formation sign of Australian Army Headquarters.
Historical Significance
Originally documented in Don Loffler’s Still Holden Together (page 201), this FX Army Ute was previously owned by Peter Dixon and purchased in 2019. Its full nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration, with assistance from other Army Ute owners, returned it to original military specifications with a flat-base acrylic respray in an off-the-gun finish. This Ute represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of Australian automotive and military history.
