Description:

1951 Pashley Baker’s Delivery Bike

If you want a conversation piece that stops every visitor dead in their tracks, this 1951 Pashley Baker's Workbike with Cyclemaster power is exactly that. Pashley have been building serious working bicycles in England since 1926, and the baker's delivery bike was the machine that kept Britain's bakers rolling through the streets morning after morning for decades. The 'WORKBIKE' designation is right there on the Pashley down tube where it belongs.

The structure is all present and correct: the smaller front wheel for stability under a loaded basket, the heavy-duty black tubular front carrier holding a full wicker delivery basket in very good condition with tight intact weave, and the large flat advertising panel within the frame triangle where the bakery name would have been painted in period. The panel is blank and clean, making it either a superb display piece as-is or a canvas for period-accurate lettering.

The clever bit is the Cyclemaster engine integrated into the rear wheel hub. Cyclemaster was a British-made product specifically designed for exactly this kind of working application, giving delivery riders genuine assistance on hills or heavy loads without changing the basic character of the bicycle. The engine casing is clean and complete with the distinctive red Cyclemaster script badge and intertwined CM logo clearly visible. Engine number 95018 is noted. This is the correct period Cyclemaster unit, not a generic auxiliary motor.

At the rear, a decorative Yvon Mau wooden wine crate has been fitted as a carrier box, adding to the charm and period feel. The British registration plate 'SCE 127' is fitted at the back with a period-correct tail light. The front carries a large period Lucas-style black headlamp above the basket, and the brown leather sprung saddle is in keeping with the character of the whole machine.

Frame paint is solid gloss black throughout. Tyres are present with serviceable tread though showing their age. The chainring shows some surface rust patina which is consistent with the age and working character of this bicycle. Chrome handlebars show age dulling.

The niche for this kind of machine is small but passionate. Early Cyclemaster-powered vehicles have their own dedicated following, and a complete, original Pashley Baker's Workbike with working-condition Cyclemaster hub engine is not something you come across regularly. This is a museum-quality display piece and a genuine collector item for someone who knows what they are looking at.
