Description:

1960 “Alice May” Motorcycle Sidecar

Alice May. That is her name, painted right there in flowing red script on her flanks, alongside a proud grey greyhound motif. This 1960 motorcycle sidecar is one of the most characterful lots you will see come through a Lloyds auction. Hand-built in the coach-built tradition, she is a proper bespoke piece, with black-painted steel panels edged with riveted aluminium strips, natural timber framing around the cockpit, red-painted tubular steel fender rails and windscreen frame, and checker-plate aluminium on the mudguard and passenger step. Very period, very cool.

Inside, she is trimmed in pleated red vinyl upholstery that is holding up well for her age. Some wear and minor scuffing are present but no tears, and the fluted stitching detail is still neat. Ahead of the passenger sits a Perspex windscreen in its red tubular frame, and a period round headlamp protected by a chrome bar graces the nose. The vertical wooden slats on the nose panel add a real 1940s coachwork feel. She rides on a single black disc wheel with a block-tread tyre that will need replacement before road use, as the rubber has hardened and cracked with age.

Underneath, the mounting arms are substantial tubular steel with universal clamp-type fittings, designed to suit a range of period British or European motorcycles. Loose wiring is present for lighting hookup. The rear carries a small wire luggage rack and a mounted aluminium canister with red end caps. The rear storage area contains what appears to be accessories and hardware.

Surface rust on the mounting arms and age wear on the paint are present and expected for a 65-year-old item, but structurally she presents well. The tyre needs replacement and the wiring would need attention before road use. The wooden framing shows weathering on upper surfaces but no obvious rot or structural decay.

Perfect for pairing with a classic British twin or single for shows and historic rides, or simply as a display piece in a collection. Alice May has a personality you just cannot manufacture. She is not a reproduction and not a generic item. She is one of a kind.
