Description:

1935 Rudge Special 500 – Parts Only / Project

If you know your pre-war British motorcycles, the name Rudge will get your attention fast. This 1935 Rudge Special 500 is a genuine, numbers-present project of the kind that rarely comes up. The frame and engine are both here, and critically, both numbers appear original, properly stamped, and unmolested.

What you get is the heart of a serious restoration. The 500cc four-valve single-cylinder engine sits in the frame with head, barrel, and crankcases externally intact, and the all-important S-prefix engine number is clearly legible on the crankcase, confirming the Special model designation. The Rudge four-speed gearbox is still mounted in the frame. The fuel tank is present and heavily patinated but structurally sound. In the parts tub you will find the front and rear mudguards in primer, the primary chaincase alloy cover (a genuinely hard-to-find piece), the oil tank, and a collection of smaller hardware and components.

The Rudge Special was among the most technically advanced motorcycles of the 1930s. The radial four-valve cylinder head delivered breathing and performance that left most contemporaries behind, and Rudge dominated the 1930-31 Isle of Man TT. Machines with intact four-valve heads and correct frame and engine numbers are highly sought after by the Rudge Enthusiasts Club and pre-war collectors around the world.

To be straight with you, this is a substantial project. Missing components include the complete girder fork assembly, both wheels, handlebars and controls, exhaust pipe and silencer, carburettor, magneto, and all electrical equipment. That is a significant list, and sourcing correct Rudge-specific parts takes patience and usually international connections. The internal engine condition is unknown. But the foundation is genuine and it is all here.

Best suited to an experienced pre-war restorer or a serious Rudge collector who already has parts network access. This is the real thing.
