1935 Rudge Special 500 – Parts / Project
A second 1935 Rudge Special 500 in the same auction. That is remarkable in itself, given how rarely these machines turn up. This example carries frame number 59399 and engine number S4006, both clearly stamped and apparently factory-original. The S-prefix on the engine confirms the Special model designation, and the frame number has been helpfully highlighted for easy verification at inspection.
The bike presents as a frame, engine, tank, and loose parts, in a similar state of incompleteness to the companion lot. The engine's four-valve head is present and visible, the barrel and crankcases appear externally sound, and the frame geometry looks straight when viewed from the front and rear, with no obvious collision damage at the steering head or main tube junctions. The fuel tank is surface-rusty but the shape is correct and the structure appears intact. The parts bin includes a rear mudguard in primer, clutch components, internal gears and shafts (suggesting prior disassembly of the primary drive at minimum), and various hardware.
Important note for buyers: the primary chaincase cover appears to be absent or removed, leaving the drive side exposed, and the presence of the gearbox will need physical confirmation at inspection. A careful inventory of the parts bin contents against a Rudge parts manual is strongly recommended before bidding.
Missing items follow the same pattern as any project Rudge: complete girder fork assembly, both wheels, handlebars and all controls, exhaust pipe and silencer, carburettor, magneto, seat, all electrical equipment, and chains. Internal engine condition is unknown.
Two Rudge Specials in one auction is a rare opportunity for the pre-war community. Whether a restorer is building one bike and wants the other for parts, or two different buyers each see the potential, these lots offer genuine pre-war building blocks from one of Britain's most respected 1930s marques. Not for the faint-hearted, but for the right buyer, an exciting starting point.
