1964 MGB Roadster - Red - Overdrive, Wire Wheels - Early Pull-Handle Car

1964 MGB Roadster, 1.8L 4-cylinder petrol, manual with overdrive, red exterior, right-hand drive.

Description

The early pull-handle MGB is the one the purists want. Built in the first few years of production before the changes started stacking up, these Mark I cars are the lightest, most direct expression of what Abingdon intended. This 1964 example ticks two of the most desirable option boxes straight away: factory overdrive and wire wheels. The chassis prefix GHN3 and engine code 18GR-U-H confirm both, along with the higher-compression export engine specification. For the MG faithful, that combination makes this a particularly worthwhile starting point.

Finished in red (believed to be the original Tartan Red), the paint is honest but tired. There is fading and oxidation across all panels, with some stone chipping and a few areas showing primer or filler beneath the topcoat. The lower rear wheel arches show the early signs of corrosion that are common on these cars and will need attention. Chrome bumpers, grille, and trim are all present and structurally sound, though dulled with age. The wire wheels with knock-off spinners are fitted on all four corners and appear to be in serviceable condition. The interior features black vinyl seats in reasonable shape with no major tears, an aftermarket three-spoke sport steering wheel, an aftermarket radio/CD unit, and an aftermarket roll bar behind the seats. The original British Jaeger instruments are in place, with the speedometer reading 02,580 miles on its five-digit odometer. The convertible soft top is included and stored in the boot alongside a spare wire wheel and jack. A lovely MG-branded leather key fob comes with the keys.

Restored early MGBs with overdrive and wire wheels have been fetching strong money recently, with a comparable 1964 MGB selling for US$28,000 on Bring a Trailer in September 2024. Even in project condition, these early cars command solid interest given the rising appreciation for chrome-bumper Bs. Located in Thomastown, Victoria.
