Description / Overview

Morgan has been building cars on an ash timber frame since 1936, and the Plus 4 is the model that put them on the map internationally. Produced from 1950 to 1969, the Plus 4 used Triumph running gear in a body that was already old-fashioned when it launched, and that deliberate anachronism became its greatest appeal. These are not fast cars. They are not comfortable cars. They are cars that make you feel every crack in the road and every corner you take, and people love them for it. The 1956 model year sits in the TR3-engined period, with the 2.0-litre four producing around 100bhp, and the combination of that engine in a car weighing barely 850kg makes for genuinely entertaining motoring.

This example presents in cream over a red leather interior. The bodywork is in good overall condition with the typical Morgan characteristics, including the hand-formed aluminium panels over the ash frame. The paint shows good gloss with some age-appropriate marks. The red leather interior appears to be a quality retrim with well-fitted seats, door panels, and trim. The dashboard retains its traditional Morgan layout with Smiths instruments. The engine bay shows the Triumph TR-series engine sitting in the correct Morgan configuration. Wire wheels are fitted with knock-off spinners, which is the classic Morgan specification. The folding windscreen, cutaway doors, and flowing front wings give the car its unmistakable silhouette.

Morgan Plus 4s from this era are highly collectible and increasingly valuable. A comparable 1956 Plus 4 sold on Bring a Trailer in July 2024 for US$28,500 (approximately A$44,000), and Broad Arrow Auctions sold a supercharged 1956 Plus 4 for US$50,400 at The Amelia in 2024. The Classic Valuer puts the average UK value at GBP 23,000 (approximately A$45,000). These cars have a devoted following and rarely come up for sale in Australia.
