Description:

1968 Moto Guzzi Ambassador

The Moto Guzzi Ambassador is one of the defining Italian motorcycles of its era, and this 1968 example is exactly the kind of project that gets serious collectors excited. The big 750cc transverse V-twin, the shaft drive, the unmistakeable silhouette: it all adds up to a bike worth restoring properly, and this one gives a solid foundation to do exactly that.

The engine is described as having approximately 100 psi compression on both cylinders with a good spark, and the carburettors have been cleaned. The starter motor is present and operational, turning the engine over, though reportedly a little slow. New head pipes have been fitted. The odometer reads 1,537 miles, which if genuine would make this a remarkably low-mileage example. The dual Veglia Borletti instruments are present and correctly branded Moto Guzzi.

The black fuel tank carries the original white MOTO GUZZI lettering with white racing stripe detail on both sides, and the badges are intact and legible. The chrome knee pads show some tarnish but are present. Both exhaust headers and chrome torpedo mufflers are in place. The frame looks straight and undamaged. All four turn signals are present with amber lenses, and the headlight lens is intact. The shaft drive swingarm and rear bevel housing are present and complete.

The bike is missing its seat, the right side panel is absent, and there are various other components to be sourced. A blue teal side cover is fitted to the left side but does not match the black scheme, suggesting it is from a different donor bike. The front tyre is a knobby non-road pattern and will need replacing. Fork boots are missing. The tachometer is labelled 'ELECTRONIC', which is potentially later than original and worth checking against correct 1968 Ambassador specifications.

One item to note: the compliance plate on the steering head references SEIMM (the ownership era post-1967 Moto Guzzi bankruptcy) and the manufacture date on the plate is partially worn. Buyers should physically inspect the plate during viewing to confirm the stated 1968 build date.

This is a project for someone who knows what they want and is prepared to do the work to get there. The Ambassador is increasingly collectible, parts support through the global Guzzi community is reasonable, and a properly restored example is a genuinely impressive machine.
