Description:

1986 Yamaha V-Max 1200

The Yamaha V-Max is one of those motorcycles that earns its reputation just by existing. Introduced in 1985, the V-Max rewrote the rulebook on what a production streetbike could do. The 1200cc V4 dragging four carburettors through the V-Boost induction system produced performance that embarrassed purpose-built sportsbikes of its era, and the drag-strip attitude wrapped in that brutally functional body made it a cult machine from day one. This 1986 example is a first-generation car, built in the year after launch when the legend was just getting started.

At 34,066 kilometres, confirmed on the odometer, this is a bike that has been used but not hammered. The vendor has done the sensible preparation work: carburettors serviced, new battery fitted, electrical systems reported as functioning correctly. It is wearing a matched pair of aftermarket twin cylindrical mufflers in a 4-into-2 arrangement, which is one of the most common and well-regarded upgrades on these bikes. The original exhaust system on first-generation V-Max is a known weak point, so this is a sensible improvement, not a botched modification.

The red tank paint is in decent condition with a reasonable gloss and no major damage. The silver-grey V-Boost intake scoops with their YAMAHA lettering are the visual centrepiece of the engine bay. Both air intake gauze screens are currently missing from the intake mouths, which is disclosed upfront and is a straightforward rectification. The radiator cover is also absent. The fork stanchions show age-related oxidation and some pitting and would benefit from inspection or refurbishment before road use. The seat shows age-related softening and some surface wrinkling on the vinyl but no major rips or tears. Aftermarket round mirrors and a chrome sissy bar with luggage rack have been added at the rear.

VIN JYA1H001FA000569 is consistent with 1986 Japanese production. Engine number 1JH-000569 is noted. Bridgestone Exedra G525 tyres are fitted front and rear with adequate tread remaining.

This is a cult machine in every sense. The V-Max ran in essentially the same form from 1985 until a full redesign in 2009, which tells you how right Yamaha got it the first time. For the collector or enthusiast chasing the definitive 1980s Japanese muscle experience, this is the bike. It needs a few items sorted and a roadworthy check before going on the street, but the soul of what makes a V-Max a V-Max is all here and very much intact.
