1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Malibu Convertible
1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Malibu two-door convertible finished in Red with twin white racing stripes. Rear-wheel drive configuration powered by a 396ci (6.5-litre) V8 petrol engine bored 40 thou to 401ci, paired with a 4-speed M21 Muncie close-ratio manual transmission and 10-bolt Tru-Trac differential. Odometer indicating 10,406 miles. Seating for five occupants.

Description / Overview:
They do not come much more desirable than this. A genuine 1968 Chevelle SS Malibu convertible in red with twin white racing stripes, built at Kansas City and confirmed by matching VIN and Fisher Body trim tag. This is the model that defined the American muscle era, and a two-door drop-top example in this colour combination is a rare thing at any auction. The car presents beautifully inside and out, with deep glossy paint, excellent chrome, a clean black interior, and a new soft-top hood from AAA Soft Tops.

The vendor has upgraded this car as a serious driver. The 396ci big block has been bored 40 thou over to 401ci for a little extra punch, and the car has received a quality round of mechanical attention including a new fuel tank and electric pump, new four-wheel disc brake conversion with new power booster and master cylinder, new power steering pump and reconditioned steering box, new American Racing Torq Thrust wheels and tyres, and a full respray in the current red. The Muncie 4-speed with Hurst shifter is correctly mated to the 10-bolt Tru-Trac differential, giving this car a proper drivetrain to match its looks.

Note: the engine block has been bored over and does not retain its original specification, so buyers seeking a strict matching-numbers example should factor this accordingly. The convertible top weatherstrip header seal requires replacement as it has deteriorated. Paint flaking and surface rust is present at the door sill/rocker junction and an inspection is recommended to assess the extent of any corrosion in this area.

Price Guide: $85,000 - $147,000
Based on US market equivalent of $55,000 - $95,000 USD for comparable examples. It is not uncommon for American classics to trade at a discount in Australia due to smaller buyer pool and parts/shipping costs.
