Description
This is the one that makes grown men stop and stare. The early bay-window T2 Westfalia is the original overlanding icon, and a 1971 pop-top example in this condition is genuinely hard to find. This bus started life in South Africa, spent time in Las Vegas, and has lived its entire life in hot, dry climates. That matters a lot with these vehicles. The rust-prone areas that kill most Kombis, the floor pans, sill sections, and battery tray, have been spared the wet weather punishment that Australian cars typically endure. It shows.
The body has been resprayed in a vivid cobalt blue, not an original VW colour but it suits the van beautifully and the panels underneath are straight and solid. The pre-1972 front end is correct for the year, identifiable by the indicators sitting below the headlights rather than above them. The Westfalia pop-top shell presents well in white, the WESTFALIA script is intact, and the Westfalia-specific jalousie (louvered) windows on the passenger side are all there. These are the details that matter to collectors. The interior cab area is tidy with quality door cards and period-appropriate cab trim. Unfortunately the listing photos do not show the camper interior in detail, so buyers should request a video inspection to assess the condition of the cabinetry, bed platform, sink, and cooking facilities. That is the most important unknown here.
The engine bay shows the 1600cc air-cooled engine with its original single-barrel carburettor setup. There is the usual age-related patina on the engine tin and some surface rust in the bay, consistent with a used and older vehicle, but nothing alarming. No engine number is recorded in this listing, so a potential buyer should verify whether the original numbers-matching engine is still in place. The pop-top canvas cannot be assessed from the photos as the roof is shown only in the closed position. T2 Westfalia pop-top canvas can run $800 to $1,500 to replace if needed, so have a good look at that during inspection. Steel wheels with VW caps and whitewall inserts give it excellent period character. This is a genuinely enjoyable, head-turning classic with a fascinating provenance story.
