Description
The Z31 300ZX is the car that a lot of people are sleeping on right now. Nissan's mid-80s flagship sports coupe brought genuine performance credentials, a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension, pop-up headlights, and that signature T-bar roof to a generation of enthusiasts who could not afford a Porsche. They are now 38 to 40 years old, values have been climbing steadily, and finding one in this condition is genuinely difficult. This example in cherry red is an outstanding survivor.
The exterior presentation on this car is exceptional for the age. The red paint gloss is deep and even across every panel with no visible fading, no oxidation, and no clear coat failure. That is remarkable for an original 1980s single-stage red in Australian conditions, where most of these are chalked out or have had a cheap respray by now. The body panels are straight with consistent gaps, no dents, no accident evidence, all original rubber trim intact including the door and wheel arch cladding that normally cracks and falls off. The T-bar roof glass panels are in place and appear undamaged. The factory Nissan telephone-dial alloys are clean and correct. This car has been looked after.
The engine bay shows the VG30E naturally aspirated 3.0-litre V6 in a largely original, unmolested state. The intake plenum, valve covers, and factory airbox are all present and correct. Engine number VG30551024A is recorded and appears to be a numbers-matching unit. There is age-appropriate patina throughout but no evidence of major leaks, heavy modifications, or bodged repairs. The wiring harnesses look intact. Note this is the naturally aspirated VG30E variant rather than the more highly strung VG30ET turbo. The non-turbo is less complex and arguably more reliable for a classic car owner who wants something they can drive regularly without worrying about aged boost plumbing. It still moves well. Rubber hoses and cooling system components should be inspected given the age, but the overall picture here is of a car that has been genuinely cared for. The hood is currently being propped manually, suggesting the bonnet struts have given up, which is a ten minute fix. This is about as good a Z31 as you will find in Australia right now.
