1979 Toyota Landcruiser HJ45 Single Cab Ute, Beige, H-Series 3.6L Diesel, 5-Speed Manual, 4WD, Restoration Project

H 3.6L Inline-6 Diesel, 5-Speed Manual, 830,550 km, Single Cab Utility, 4WD, 3 Seats.

Description / Overview

The 40-series Toyota Landcruiser needs no introduction in Australia. Built to survive conditions that would destroy lesser vehicles, the HJ45 single cab ute was the workhorse variant, the one that spent its life on stations, mine sites, and bush tracks across the country. Powered by Toyota's H-series 3.6-litre inline-six diesel, mated to a 5-speed manual and dual-range transfer case, these were built for one purpose: getting the job done, no matter what. The market for 40-series Cruisers has moved sharply in the last few years, and even project-grade examples attract strong interest from restorers and enthusiasts.

This HJ45 is offered as a non-running restoration project. The beige paint is heavily faded and oxidised across all panels, and there is surface rust on the bonnet, front guards, drip rails, cab corners, and tray panels. The tray floor shows significant surface corrosion. The cab floor and footwells also show rust that will need proper assessment and repair. An aftermarket heavy-duty steel bull bar is fitted to the front with a tow bar at the rear. The steel flat tray with low side gates and timber rail caps appears to be an aftermarket or replacement unit. The chassis rails, leaf springs, and running gear are visible beneath and show heavy surface corrosion, which is standard for a vehicle of this age and use pattern. All glass appears intact, and the body panels are straight with no obvious collision damage. The round headlights, grille, and indicator assemblies are all present and intact.

Under the bonnet, the H-series diesel is in situ but non-running. The valve cover, intake, exhaust manifold, and air cleaner housing all show heavy surface rust. The firewall shows significant paint loss and corrosion. Some non-original electrical wiring modifications are visible around the battery area. The engine bay is dirty and tired, consistent with decades of hard use and outdoor storage, but the engine and gearbox remain in place for a complete restoration.

Inside, the bench seat vinyl is severely deteriorated with large tears and exposed foam on both driver and passenger sides. The dashboard is the original painted metal type and is intact. The factory steering wheel with the Toyota "T" logo horn button is present. Both the main gearshift and transfer case lever protrude from the transmission tunnel with the "TOYOTA" embossed rubber boot. The instrument cluster shows an odometer reading of 83,055 km. The speedometer reads to 160 km/h. The cabin floor shows bare metal with rust, and the door trims are in poor condition with the passenger side card torn and the driver side stripped to bare metal.

Even in this condition, 40-series Landcruisers command strong money. Restored HJ45 utes routinely sell for $60,000 to $100,000 and beyond. Project examples like this, with the engine and running gear complete, the chassis intact, and the body straight, still attract serious buyers who understand what these Cruisers are worth when brought back to life. The HJ45 single cab ute is one of the most sought-after body styles in the 40-series range, and they are only getting rarer.
