1964 DRB Sabre Magnum MK 1 Convertible - White/Blue - 20,826km - VW-Powered Australian Kit Car, Detachable Roof

1964 DRB Sabre Magnum MK 1 convertible finished in white with blue accent stripes. VW air-cooled flat-four engine, 4-speed manual transmission, odometer indicating 20,826 kilometres. Seating for two.

Description

The DRB Sabre is a genuinely rare piece of Australian automotive history. Built in limited numbers from the late 1970s through the 1980s, these fibreglass-bodied sports cars used VW Beetle mechanicals as their foundation and offered exotic styling at a fraction of the cost of a European import. The Magnum variant is the doorless, climb-in version of the Sabre MK1, though this particular example appears to have been built with conventional door openings. Very few survive in running condition, making any DRB an uncommon auction find.

This example presents in a two-tone white and blue colour scheme with painted racing stripes running the length of the body. The fibreglass bodywork is in good overall condition with typical hand-laid imperfections but no major cracks or structural damage visible. The wedge-shaped nose with recessed rectangular headlights gives it a dramatic presence, and the low stance turns heads anywhere it goes. The rear-mounted VW air-cooled flat-four is visible through the louvred engine cover, showing accumulated grime but appearing complete and intact. The interior features beige upholstered bucket seats, a beautifully finished wood-rimmed steering wheel with a VW Wolfsburg crest centre boss, and three circular gauges set into a black dashboard. A convertible soft top with a detachable hardtop option provides weather protection. Behind the seats, a compartment houses the battery and coolant overflow tank, with timber cross-bracing visible in the kit-car's construction. Globe alloy wheels are fitted on all four corners with modern tyres.

DRB Sabres rarely come to market. Previous examples have traded privately for around $10,000 to $20,000 depending on condition and running status. This one appears to be a complete, presentable example with the Magnum designation adding further rarity. For the collector who wants something genuinely different, this is a conversation starter that celebrates a uniquely Australian chapter of sports car building.
