Description
The VS Maloo is where HSV's ute story really got serious. Produced from 1996 through to late 1998, the VS Series III Maloo combined the 5.0-litre V8 with HSV's own tuning, distinctive bodywork, sports suspension and the kind of street presence that made people look twice at a ute. This example is build number 262, finished in red with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Vendor advises the manual is a rare combination for the Series III Maloo, and that is accurate. The vast majority left the factory with the 4-speed automatic, making manual examples genuinely uncommon. It is worth noting that the Holden compliance plate records the original base vehicle specification as M34 (automatic), which is consistent with HSV building on a standard Holden platform before conversion.
The exterior presents very well for a vehicle of this age and kilometres. The red paint carries genuine depth and gloss across all panels with no visible dents, rust or colour mismatches. All HSV-specific body components are present: the Maloo front bar with silver lower lip, white side skirts running the full length, body-colour red sports bar behind the cab, and the "Maloo" script badges on both front guards. The genuine HSV tonneau cover with the lion crest logo is fitted over the tub, and the factory 16-inch five-spoke HSV alloy wheels are in good order. Under the bonnet, the 5.0-litre V8 with "INJECTION" lettering on the intake manifold sits alongside the correct HSV-branded airbox. The engine bay is largely stock with no visible aftermarket modifications. Inside, the dashboard is uncracked, which is increasingly rare on these. The HSV-specific cloth seats with "Maloo" script woven into the fabric are a standout originality marker, and the HSV floor mats and "185" badge on the rear header confirm the genuine article. The HSV instrument cluster with its 250 km/h speedometer branded "HSV" is another key authenticity piece.
VS Maloos have been climbing steadily as Holden collectibility strengthens across the board. Manual examples are harder to find and carry a premium. No price guide is listed, so this one will be settled by the room.
