Description

The Fiat 124 Spider is one of the great Italian open-top sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s. Styled by Tom Tjaarda at Pininfarina, powered by Aurelio Lampredi's twin-cam four-cylinder, and built in a production run spanning from 1966 to 1985, the 124 Spider earned a devoted following worldwide. This CS1-series 1600 is a 1978 US-market car, manufactured June 1978 per the Federal compliance plate, and imported to Australia where it has been maintained by an enthusiast.

The black exterior paint is exceptional. It holds deep gloss with mirror-like reflections across all panels, and photos from multiple angles in studio lighting confirm consistent colour depth throughout. Panel gaps are even and straight. Chrome trim along the sills, around the windscreen, and on the bumpers is in good order. The Pininfarina "f" badges are present on both front fenders. Four matching silver Cromodora-style alloy wheels are fitted with HF201 tyres showing good tread depth. The black convertible soft top is intact with a clear plastic rear window. The "1600" badge on the rear bootlid confirms the engine specification.

Inside is where this car really shines. The full red leather/vinyl interior has been retrimmed to a very high standard. Red bucket seats with black piping and FIAT-branded seatbelt pads, red door cards with chrome trim strips and armrest pockets, red carpet throughout with FIAT-branded floor mats, and a beautiful Nardi wood-rim steering wheel with FIAT centre badge. The Pininfarina sill plates are intact. Chrome gear lever with red leather shift boot, chrome handbrake lever, and a drilled aluminium dead pedal complete the cabin. A Sony Bluetooth head unit provides modern connectivity. Aftermarket Autometer oil pressure and vacuum gauges are mounted below the dashboard centre. The original Veglia Borletti instrument cluster includes speedometer (29,294 miles), tachometer, water temperature gauge, ammeter, and clock. All gauges appear functional.

Under the bonnet sits the 1.6-litre DOHC inline-four (engine type 132A1.0316 per the build plate) with a chrome mesh aftermarket air filter. The engine bay is functional rather than concours, with some exposed wiring and patina, but all components appear complete and intact. A "LEADED FUEL ONLY" sticker in the boot is a neat period detail. The boot is clean and lined, with the convertible top boot cover stowed inside.

Black over red is the definitive 124 Spider colour combination, and this car wears it beautifully. With low miles, a stunning retrimmed interior, and the classic Pininfarina lines, this is an Italian sports car that will turn heads at any Italian car day or weekend cruise.
