Description
The third-generation Corvette Stingray is the quintessential American sports car of the early 1970s, and the 1971 model year is exactly where collectors want to be. This is the last of the chrome-bumper C3s before the rubber bumper era arrived in 1973, and convertibles with 400 cubic inch engines are a genuinely scarce combination. Fewer buyers are chasing them than the 454 big blocks, but the 400ci small block is a sweeter engine in many ways, more tractable and just as characterful. Add a convertible body and you have the triple that gets serious bidders interested.
This Stingray has been returned to bare fibreglass and resprayed in Sting Red, and the photos confirm a glossy, well-applied finish with strong depth and reflection across all panels. The pop-up headlights have been converted to LED and operate via an electric actuator. A new soft top and full rubber seal kit have been fitted, new chrome bumpers front and rear are on, and the Tru Ray wire-spoke wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tyres complete the exterior. The engine bay houses the 400ci V8 fitted with a 750DP Holley carburetor on alloy heads with performer headers, backed by a Turbo 400 automatic, four-core radiator, twin SPAL thermo fans, and MSD ignition. Stainless steel exhaust. The interior presents in black with the period-correct factory tilt and telescopic steering column and power steering in place. Interior trim shows wear consistent with a car that has been driven and used rather than fully restored, which is honest for a refreshed driver rather than a concours piece.
Chrome-bumper C3 Stingray convertibles in refreshed, driver-quality condition are consistently strong performers at auction in Australia. The 1968-1972 generation attracts both local muscle car buyers and the export market, and a 400ci example is harder to find than the common 350. Comparable C3 convertibles in refreshed condition have been selling from AUD $65,000 to $95,000 depending on spec and provenance. Vendor advises this is part of a private collection.
