Price Guide: $22,000 - $34,000

Authentic 1928 Model A Roadster with functional rumble seat, confirmed engine and chassis numbers, and honest older-restoration presentation. Indicating 81,915 miles.

Description

The Ford Model A holds a very particular place in motoring history. When Henry Ford shut down the River Rouge plant for six months in 1927 to retool after the legendary Model T, what emerged was a genuine leap forward. A proper 40-horsepower inline-four, a three-speed sliding gear transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes, and a range of body styles that rivalled anything on the market. Nearly 4.9 million were built between 1927 and 1931, and the roadster with rumble seat remains one of the most evocative and sought-after body styles of the era. This is a Canadian-built example, confirmed by the engine number prefix CAW, indicating assembly at the Windsor, Ontario plant.

This example presents as a completed older restoration in a handsome two-tone beige and cream upper body over black lower body and fenders, divided by a hand-painted brown accent line. Photos confirm the paint carries honest patina from a restoration now likely ten to twenty years old, with some dulling and minor chipping, but the overall presentation is clean and correct. Panel alignment is good throughout. The black wire spoke wheels are correctly finished and fitted with whitewall tyres. A Ford-branded spare tyre cover sits on the rear-mounted spare. The black soft top is erected and serviceable, showing some age-related wrinkling. The interior features brown pleated bench upholstery in good condition with minimal cracking, matching door cards, dark carpeting, and a four-spoke steering wheel. The rumble seat opens to reveal matching brown upholstery. A period-style accordion luggage rack with tool bag sits on the running board. The engine bay houses the original 3.3-litre inline-four, presenting as complete with correct components including the original carburettor, exhaust manifold, and starter motor. Red ignition wires are a modern practical replacement. The chassis number W55072 is stamped and visible on the frame rail, consistent with 1928 Model A production.

Model A Roadsters at this driver-quality presentation level have been trading consistently between $22,000 and $38,000 AUD at Australian auctions and private sale, with fresher restorations and fully documented examples commanding the upper end. This is an honest, accessible entry into pre-war motoring with genuine character and confirmed provenance.
