1963 Holden EJ Sedan - Red - 59,360 Miles - 186ci Inline 6, 3-Speed Manual
Genuine Australian classic in original body colour, running 186ci inline six, with body ID plate intact and original Holden badging present throughout.
Description
The Holden EJ Sedan holds a special place in Australian motoring history. Launched in 1962, it was the first truly fresh design Holden produced after the original FJ, introducing cleaner lines, a more spacious interior and the engineering advances that would carry the marque through the 1960s. The four-door sedan was the backbone of the range, a genuine family car built for Australian conditions, and today these early post-FJ Holdens are increasingly recognised as historically significant pieces of Australian manufacturing heritage. Original, unmodified examples are becoming genuinely difficult to find.
This EJ presents in red with what appears to be a respray, the paint holding reasonable gloss across the panels with the body lines straight and consistent. The front end is strong, the horizontal bar grille with its Holden script badge presenting well, chrome bumpers intact and presentable. The EJ body ID plate on the firewall is present and legible, confirming body number EJ225M-3477-A and factory paint code 585-4688. The original Holden lion-and-stone fender badge is also present. The interior has seen practical use over the years: the dashboard is structurally sound in its characteristic aqua-green colour, the original EJ instruments are in place, and the glove box retains its period Holden script badge. The car has had a number of modifications over its life, including aftermarket bucket seats, a wood-rim steering wheel, Smiths auxiliary gauges, a Sony head unit, and a floor-mounted gear shifter. The engine bay houses the 186ci inline-six with a chrome rocker cover, chrome air filter, electronic ignition conversion and yellow HT leads. The boot shows rust on the floor and the spare wheel is present but heavily surface rusted. Wiring under the dash shows various non-original additions and should be assessed before extended use.
The EJ sedan market has strengthened as collectors recognise the significance of these early-1960s Holdens. Comparable examples in similar driver-quality condition have been trading in the $10,000 to $18,000 range at auction and through private sales, with fully restored examples pushing well above $25,000. At a price guide of $10,000 to $22,000, this car sits squarely in the market for an enthusiast who wants a genuine, driveable EJ with its body and identity intact, as a driver or as the foundation for a sympathetic restoration.
