Description
Meet Audrey. This is not an American import, not a kit car from a catalogue, and not a replica in the conventional sense. Vendor advises this is one of three prototype Auburn 876 Boattail Speedsters built by the Auburn Motor Car Company of Melbourne, Australia, of which only two are now believed to survive. The body is an exact-scale reproduction of the legendary 1935 Auburn 852 Boattail Speedster, the same model famously owned by Clark Gable, executed by an Australian coachbuilder who commissioned a 1966 Ford Galaxie chassis professionally extended to fit the body perfectly. The running gear is all Ford, a 351ci Cleveland V8 coupled to an FMX automatic gearbox driving through a 9-inch Ford differential, making it mechanically sound, reliable, and very well supported for parts.
Audrey presents beautifully. The two-tone blue metallic paint is glossy and clean across all panels, with the lighter body complemented by slightly darker pontoon fenders and the classic chrome decorative exhaust stacks sweeping through the hood sides in the Auburn tradition. These stacks are the car's most iconic visual feature, faithfully executed in highly polished chrome with no visible pitting or oxidation. The gold Auburn Goddess hood ornament and Auburn script badge on the bonnet are both in excellent condition. Wire-spoke wheels with wide whitewall tyres are correct for the era. The navy canvas convertible top is in good condition with intact seams and a clear rear window. The interior is navy blue leather with vertical pleating and period-appropriate headrests, presenting very well and consistent with the 2022 recommissioning. The wood-rimmed steering wheel and full analogue gauge cluster, with a Stewart Warner speedometer and burl wood surround, are correct to the build. The floor-mounted automatic shifter is an aftermarket addition. Documentation includes two NSW Historic and Classic Vehicle Log Books and two Certificates of Conditional Registration, along with a factory identification plate confirming manufacturer as Auburn Motor Car Co, Melbourne, and serial number AMC79003. An ADF military data plate is absent from this vehicle, confirming it is a civilian-specification build rather than one of the concurrent military variants. Recommissioned in 2022 and now covering approximately 47,000km.
There is genuinely nothing else like this in the Australian market. The combination of authentic local coachbuilding provenance, Ford mechanicals, a restoration recommission in 2022, and the sheer visual drama of the Auburn Boattail design makes Audrey a serious collector proposition. Vendor advises this is the best existing example of the Australian-built Auburn 876 series. For anyone drawn to pre-war aesthetics without pre-war reliability concerns, this is a rare opportunity.
