Description
The AM General HMMWV needs no introduction. Developed in the early 1980s for the US military, it became one of the most recognised military vehicles in history. This 1987 example carries serial number 027206 and was delivered in June 1987 under US Army contract DAAE07-83-C-R034. The data plate confirms it as an M998 cargo and troop carrier in standard 1.25 tonne payload configuration, powered by the naturally aspirated 6.2 litre Detroit Diesel V8 and automatic transmission. It has been VASS complied in Victoria (certificate V0024206, December 2022) for Australian road use under the NB1 light goods vehicle category, with a modified GVM of 3,490kg.
The vehicle presents in silver with a four-door hard-top configuration. The body panels are straight with consistent finish across all surfaces and no evidence of collision damage. The riveted aluminium body construction is intact throughout. It has been fitted with several aftermarket upgrades including a front brush bar with integrated winch, LED headlights, LED auxiliary light bars on the rear bumper, aftermarket Punisher-style tail light guards, roof-mounted amber clearance lights, and Kanati Mud Hog mud-terrain tyres on black multi-spoke alloy wheels. The engine bay houses the 6.2 litre naturally aspirated diesel V8 in largely original configuration. Components appear intact with no visible leaks. The air intake system retains its military-spec layout with restriction gauge still fitted and reading within normal range. The undercarriage is clean and well-maintained with suspension components appearing recently serviced or detailed.
The interior has been upgraded with aftermarket light grey leather bucket seats in all four positions, replacing the original military canvas. These present in excellent condition with minimal wear. The original military dashboard and instrument cluster are retained, with all gauges present and the odometer confirmed at 28,378 miles. Military radio and communications equipment remains mounted on the centre console, adding character. The corrugated rubber floor matting shows use-appropriate wear but is intact. One key is present.
Comparable VASS-complied examples have traded between $50,000 and $90,000 depending on spec, condition, and modification level. The low mileage and Victorian VASS compliance are genuine selling points.
