Description
Before the VH 05 Series, before the Group A Walkinshaw, before Peter Brock became a name even non-car people knew, there was the VC Brock. In 1980, HDT Special Vehicles took the new VC Commodore SL/E, applied their performance and appearance package, and produced 500 cars that changed the direction of Australian performance motoring. This is Build #125, an early production example from the first quarter of the run, and it has spent the last decade in private collection ownership. The factory VIN plate is intact, undisturbed, and correctly riveted. This is a genuine numbered car.
Externally the car presents very well. The maroon paint delivers a deep, consistent gloss across all panels with no obvious fade or colour mismatch between panels. All the major HDT exterior identifiers are present and correct: the HDT front air dam, the boot lip spoiler, the HDT side stripe and badging package, Peter Brock script badging on the lower rear quarter panel, HDT alloy-style wheels with their distinctive Racing script centre caps, and the rear quarter louvres. Panel gaps are even and the stance is correct. The only non-original item visible externally is a towbar fitted at the rear. The compliance plate from the door jamb area confirms the factory build details. Photos show the interior in maroon velour throughout, door cards, seats, and rear cabin, all in excellent condition with no visible wear, fading, or damage. The vendor describes the car as factory standard. The engine bay shows the 308ci V8 dressed with a maroon-coloured rocker cover matching the body, an HDT air cleaner assembly, and the period-correct "Start and Go Bathurst" battery. The bay presents as generally tidy and consistent with a privately maintained, low-use collector vehicle. Air conditioning is fitted, standard to the VC Brock specification.
VC Brock Commodores are among the most historically significant Australian production vehicles of their era. All 500 were produced, and numbered examples with documented provenance and low recent use are commanding serious collector money. Comparable VC Brocks in presentable condition have sold between $65,000 and $100,000+ at specialist auction houses including Shannons and Burns and Co, with early numbered builds in private collection condition sitting at the upper end of that range. This example, at Build #125 with 10 years of private collection ownership and a factory-standard presentation, is genuine hero-lot material.
