1971 Volkswagen Westfalia T2 Pop-Top Camper - Cobalt Blue - 68,772 Miles - South Africa/Las Vegas Dry Climate Survivor

Price Guide: $28,000 - $42,000

1971 VW T2 Westfalia pop-top camper, rear-wheel drive, 1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four, 4-speed manual, indicating 68,772 miles, 4 seats.

Description

The early bay-window T2 Westfalia is the original overlanding icon. A 1971 pop-top example in this condition is genuinely difficult to find, and the provenance story here is the headline. This bus was built and delivered in South Africa, later relocated to Las Vegas, and has spent its entire life in hot, dry climates. That history matters enormously with T2 Kombis. The rust that kills most of these vans, the floor pans, sill sections, and battery trays that rot out from Queensland rain and morning dew, simply has not had the opportunity to take hold here. From what is visible in the photos, the body holds up that story. Panels are straight, the cobalt blue respray carries solid gloss across all surfaces, and there are no rust stains tracking down from the seams. The pre-1972 front end is correct for the year, identifiable by the indicators sitting below the headlights rather than above them, a detail that matters to collectors. The Westfalia pop-top shell presents well in white with the WESTFALIA script intact, and the Westfalia-specific jalousie louvered windows on the passenger side are all present and accounted for. These are the details that confirm you are looking at a genuine Westfalia-optioned van rather than a later conversion.

The camper interior is the real story. Through the open sliding door, a Westfalia cabinet unit is visible in oak-finish timber with drawers, a fold-down grey laminate table, sleeping platform, and wood-effect laminate flooring. The gingham check curtains run throughout, and the overall impression is of a refreshed rather than all-original interior, which is a practical positive. The cab area is tidy with period-appropriate trim, original three-spoke steering wheel, floor-mounted gear shift, and a right-hand drive configuration confirming the South African build. The engine bay shows the 1600cc air-cooled unit with single-barrel carburettor, correct fan shroud and tinware. Surface grime and some minor patina on the engine tin are consistent with an honest survivor rather than a trailer queen. One notable detail from the photos: the odometer gauge reads in km/h, and the 68,772 figure may represent kilometres rather than miles as listed.

The T2 Westfalia pop-top market in Australia remains strong. Comparable examples with Westfalia interiors and dry-climate history have achieved between AUD $45,000 and $75,000 at auction and private sale, with condition and provenance the primary variables. This bus has a genuinely unusual biography, and the combination of dry-climate history, intact Westfalia fit-out, and correct pre-1972 front end puts it at the desirable end of the spectrum.
